In the early years of the colonies, the colonists pretty much governed themselves with very little British authority. It was not until the renewed hostilities between the British and the French that the British started imposing new and higher taxes on the colonies and started imposing more control over them for resources and revenue to help in the war effort. This naturally made the colonists extremely upset because they had no say in Parliment and were being taxed and drafted for a war in which they had no say or interest in.
